Middle School History-Feb/March 2012

6th Grade:
The class has begun it's unit on Ancient China; including:  The Great Wall, the culture, the geography, inventions, reasons for it's isolationism, etc.
Confusionism, Buddhism will also be studied and connected to communism(present day China);  after this unit we move on to Greece!

Tests:
Students will be tested after chapter readings(quizes) and at the end of the Unit-exams of 25-50 questions; including short answer and essay questions. 

Projects:
Students will complete another glogster project, and/or a "one pager" poster(individual and in-class).

7th Grade:
Students have begun the unit on JAPAN.  We will learn how China influenced Japan; Buddhism, architecture, laws, etc.  We learn about the Samurai's complex society(ultimate warriors who practiced poetry and art).  The feudalistic society will be examined extensively-we will connect it to our next unit on European feudalism(King/lord/nobles/knights).

Tests:
reading quizes at end of chapter;  Unit exam at end of appropriate time.

Projects:
We will complete a "one pager" in class in mid-late March

8th Grade:
We have finished the short unit on Andrew Jackson and are moving onto "sectionalism";  leading up to the Civil War which will start in mid-Feb.  We will also have a debate(4 teams) about whether the Civil War was about slavery or was it more about state's rights; will be part of their research paper requirement.
We will also watch "Glory" (pg-13 version); writing assignment to go along w/ the movie.

Tests:
We will have several reading quizes and one "unit exam" 50-75 questions about the Civil War

Projects:
Civil War time line-will collaborate w/ Mrs. Kennedy in computers


MONTH AT A GLANCE-Oct/Nov

ANCIENT HISTORY(OCT/NOV):
6th grade students will continue to learn about Egypt's unique civilization.  The students seem very intrigued with the process of mummification, and the culture of the Egyptians.  We will spend Oct. 31st discussing the history of Halloween!

PROJECTS: Students have been working on and are near completion of their "Glogster" reports;  this is a combined computer/history project-Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy who is guiding the students through this new project.

TESTS:  there will be a unit exam about Egypt/Kush in Early November.


MEDIEVAL HISTORY(Oct/Nov):
7th grade students have completed their unit on Islam and are now working on their unit about Medieval Africa.  I have just described to the students, how they will have a major project due in Dec.(more to follow at a later date).

TESTS:  we will have a unit exam on Africa in November.

US HISTORY(Oct/Nov):
8th grade
Students are learning about the US Constitution-a very demanding unit of 10 weeks!  Mr. Scott, a former Federal prosecutor, and GHS parent was kind enough to give a 3 day lesson to the students-it was "awesome"(an actual student's words)-Thank you Mr. Scott.  We will continue to examine the intricasies of our Constitution and how the Federal Government is "supposed" to work.  We will exam actual court cases and let the students be the judge.
TESTS:  there will be several small vocabulary quizes; but the major Constituion test(135 pts+) will be in December. 
 
PROJECTS: Students have been working on and are near completion of their "Glogster" reports;  this is a combined computer/history project-Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy who is guiding the students through this new project.
